Ahmed El Gendy (Cairo, 1987)
Egyptian-Dutch interdisciplinary artist based in Amsterdam.
Through moving-bodies and moving-images, they explore the wonders and weights of entanglement and encounter.
Their work engages questions of agency and interdependence. They are interested in how our bodies are informed through physiological capacities and socio-political conditioning. They have been developing a score-based material-driven practice that experiments with water, ropes, wheels, machines, and large objects to brush against the edges of intimacy, proximity, and endurance.
Their work has shown at Mediterranea Biennale (Italy), Marres House for Contemporary Culture (Netherlands), Dance House Lefkosia (Cyprus), and Festifreak Festival for Independent Cinema (Argentina).
Ahmed holds a master’s degree from DAS Choreography (2024), Amsterdam University of the Arts. They graduated with a bachelor's degree in Choreography from the SNDO - School for New Dance Development (2019), and a bachelor's degree in Graphic Design from October University in Cairo (2010). They studied dance at the Cairo Contemporary Dance Workshops Programme (2011) in Studio Emad Eddin Foundation.
They facilitate workshops in academic and community contexts, including at DAE - Design Academy Eindhoven, ECD - Expanded Contemporary Dance in Amsterdam, and ISAC - Institut Supérieur des Arts et des Chorégraphies in Brussels.
As a performer in dance, theatre, and film, Ahmed has collaborated with, among others, Connor Schumacher, Arno Schuitemaker, Olivier Dubois, Andreas Hannes, Nic Bruckman, Diane Mahín, and Mohamed Shawky Hassan.
Ahmed is part of the collective Jakoozi, an artist-run space for movement practices in Amsterdam.
